"Tell me, how did a clever and comely girl such as yourself become the wife of a fool? Did your father force the match upon you?” Anne Boleyn asked.

Emma shook her head. She couldn’t remember the story Will had told her to say if she was asked, so she said, “Will saw me on the beach and wanted me for his wife. I said yes.”

“What did your father say?”

Emma considered. “I am not sure. I did not ask.”
