Under These Restless Skies will be released on February 20, and every day until then, I'll be posting a small excerpt. You can check out the book's blog here, including more excerpts and information on the Tudor historical characters in the story, and the legend of the selkies on which the story is based.

Today's Excerpt:
“I have never seen the king so wroth with Anne.”
Emma jerked in surprise and turned to find Jane Parker tucked into the shadows of the tapestry, drawn back to allow light into the room. “But all her sweet simpers and coy persuasions would not cajole him from his anger this time.”
Emma said nothing. She stared straight ahead, ignoring Jane, who didn’t seem to be troubled by it one whit.
“Aye, even her usual threats to go home to Hever did not turn him to pleading.” Jane paused for so long Emma thought she must have left, but then she spoke again and the bitter edge to her voice made Emma want to cringe. “Hearken to my words. My husband, George, will be along anon to soothe her pains.”
Emma could hold her tongue no longer. “And why should he not? He is her brother and he loves her.” She glared at Jane, but Jane wasn’t looking at her. Her prophecy had come to pass as George came through the door and went straight to his sister. He laid his hands on Anne’s shoulders and spoke to her for a moment before drawing her into an embrace. Anne laid her head on his shoulder.
“Verily, he does,” Jane said, and her tone was so odd Emma turned to look at her, but Jane had turned and walked away, her skirts swishing behind her as she headed for the door to the privy chamber.
